2016 Spring Complimentary Demonstrations

Come, Learn and Enjoy!

Come and watch our instructors in action on the first day of class.  These complimentary demonstrations allow you to step inside the minds of these skilled artists and engage in conversation about the creative process and passion for art-marking.  In addition, receive information on instructors’ favorite tools, mediums and materials! No reservation required. Availability is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students currently enrolled in class have preferred seating and may be invited to draw or paint during the demo.

Thursday – April 14th

Registration is open for our winter quarter classes.  We have a fabulous selection of classes and we are also introducing new classes such as:  Character Design (From Life Drawing), Imaginative Animal Design/Drawing, Tonal Figure Drawing, Figure Painting (Indirect, 17th Century Technique), Female Portrait Study (Drawing, Sculpting to ZBrush), Introduction to Head/Figure Painting and more…  At your convenience, please click on the image for your own personal PDF copy of all of our classes.

Drop-In Classes | LAAFA Congratulates

Drop-In Classes at LAAFA

For those who are unable to commit to our 8 or 10-week classes or who would like to experience a new instructor, we offer reserved  drop-in classes at the Van Nuys and Santa Monica locations. Students will need to call us directly at 818-708-9232 24-hours in advance of the class to reserve a spot. Only select classes and limited spots are available for drop-in day-rates starting from $65.00.

 

 

 

Congratulations!

Bergamot Open House

Art Scholarships & Drawing Workshop

Current full-time and extension students are welcome to enter the  competition to receive a Contemporary Representational Art Scholarship for the Fall 2012 quarter.  Contemporary Representational Art includes figures, still life, and landscapes. Please click on links above for more information on requirements for each of these scholarships.  Deadline is August 15th!

 

 

Nathan Fowkes | August 18th

For the Portrait Drawing in Charcoal Workshop, Nathan will present a slideshow that will take you through the principles you need to know to successfully draw a portrait from life.  He will do a full demonstration in charcoal, then turn the time over to you to draw from a live costumed model with him guiding you as your coach.

On Saturday, June 2, LAAFA’s Summer Open House gave prospective and current students a chance to socialize and to enjoy demonstrations by Sharon Weaver and Vadim Zang

Starting in early July, Sharon will be teaching Plein Air/ Landscaping Painting on Fridays.

Vadim’s Summer classes include Head/Figure Painting on Mondays and Tonal Figure Drawing on Thursdays.

In preparation, we are having a book drive. From now until July 1st, donate your art books to receive a raffle ticket for FREE summer classes! Each book donated gets you one raffle ticket. Raffle winners will be announced July 2nd.

You can drop off your books at the LAAFA office during business hours:

Mondays -Thursdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Fridays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturdays – Sundays 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

May Workshops at LAAFA with Nathan Fowkes & Marshall Vandruff

On Saturday, May 19th, Nathan Fowkes has a one-day workshop – Composition: Design for Dynamic Picture-Making.  This intensive workshop will cover fundamentals of effective picture-making, creating mood and environment, and organizing complex scenes.  The workshop includes a painting demonstration by Nathan, as well as time for student painting with instructor feedback. May 25th-27th master illustrator and instructor Marshall Vandruff presents a crash-course in the classic approach to draftsmanship and animal anatomy.  The workshop will teach students to draw animals from their imagination as well as to interpret visual information when drawing animals from life. Mike Butkus Complimentary Demonstration

March 11th, 12pm to 2pm

Mike will demonstrate how to draw Vampires and Zombies from his books, using a limited gouache palette. He will explain the techniques used in the books and advise on how to create creatures from imagination. In addition, there will be a Q & A session on producing ideas for the movie, T.V. and gaming industry.
Reservations for demos are required. Walk-ins will be based on space availability. Refreshments will be served.

  
Rey Bustos Complimentary Lecture

March 11th, 2pm to 4pm

Rey Bustos is one of the leading artistic anatomists in the country today! We are excited that Rey will be lecturing, drawing, sculpting and showing students first-hand his love for anatomy in a fun and dynamic way. Get ready to enjoy several brief demos, a Q & A session and more. It’s going to be lively!
