James Hegedus

James Hegedus

James Hegedus was born and raised in the Texas Panhandle. After completing high school he traveled to Oakland California and attended the California College of Arts and Crafts where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Upon graduation he moved to Los Angeles where he interviewed with Hannah Barbera Studio and was hired as a Layout and Background artist to work on their animation programs. During this time he attended a program at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Production Design that featured seven academy award winning Production Designers. It was his good fortune to meet John Decuir and to begin, what was to become,  a four year apprenticeship with him.

Hegedus began his live action career as an Illustrator and Storyboard Artist on the remake of Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone television series at CBS Studios. After two seasons of working on the series he took the opportunity to work on his first live action feature film, The Milagro Beanfield War, directed by Robert Redford, working as a Production Illustrator.

Three years and many films later Hegedus became the Art Director for Apogee Productions, the visual effects company led by John Dykstra who had been awarded an Oscar for his pioneering work on George Lucas’s Star Wars. It was at this time Hegedus was invited into the Art Directors Guild.

After two years work with Apogee, Hegedus  resumed his work as a Production Illustrator on Robert Zemeckis’ FOREST GUMP, followed by work as an Art Director on the Robert Heinlen story, PUPPET MASTERS and on Tim Burton’s MARS ATTACKS. In 1996 Hegedus became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his contributions in the field of Art Direction.  He continued to illustrate and art direct, and then in 1998 accepted the role of Production Designer for the Dream Works CGI  production of SHREK, the first animated feature length film to be awarded an Oscar by the Academy for best animated feature film.

Hegedus continues to work in both live action and animation. He is currently Production Designing a Graphic Novel entitled PASSIONS REQUIEM written by Brian Cowden, and creating Conceptual Designs for Walt Disney Imagineering’s TOKYO DISNEYLAND.

Hegedus resides and works in Los Angeles, California.
